The Rebellion Against Victorianism The 1890's was in time for transformation for the English society. After Queen Victoria died the heart of the Victorian culture seemed to fade. England was beginning to experience economic competition from other states and a gradual decline from its former pinnacle of power. Politically, the Parliament experienced some fundamental power shifts after the turn of the century. This essay will address the climate of change in the English culture and its expressions. The changes occurred in two separate and distinct time periods. These time periods are the turn of the century from 1890's to World War II. The second period is WWII to 1970's. The new century brought about an end to the old and stuffy Victorian life-styles. The social stigmas of women and their behavior was challenged and change by the rise of feminism in 1910. Women began to protest against the system for women 's suffrage. One instance these "violent women" r an around in the city smashing store windows to get notoriety for their cause. Books such as the Odd Women, featured a fictional representation of "professional women". They were classified in two categories, both an attack on the social institution of marriage. The first of these new women were out only for fun. The second was the concept of an asexual being who did not need a man. These women owned their own flats and had various jobs usually secretarial in nature.. The book expressed an uncomfortable period of transformation. Working women were not completely accepted by English society at this time. The book portrayed different lives and how they coped with their situations.1 The male character was also in a state of change. This change brought about the term "new men". These new men were classified by a "sexual anarchy". This movement was predominantly a middle class, liberal expression. Many were young male artisans who were homosexual . The word homosexuality was creat ed by an amendment to criminal law which had declared all acts of sodomy as illegal. Previous to this amendment the act of homosexuality was punishable by hanging. Doctors and scientist had seen homosexuality as a disease, thus the need developed for a "cure". Sexuality became all inclusive. There was a large aesthetic movement which was also inherent in this "new" culture. This movement classified art as being done for art's sake. Art was now being viewed as separate from society. This meant that art could be a personal expression rather than a group think project. These attributes coined the term the "Decadent Movement". The England was experiencing tremendous growth in its economy and political change during this time. However, this growth was also shared by to other rival countries, Germany and the United States. England had a fear of the massive economic strength of the United States. England, at the turn of the century, was no longer the international hegemon it was a decade previous. This caused the English look introspectly at itself. The political change occurred inside of the Parliament. The conservative House of Lords began vetoing new liberal budget proposals. Both the Prime Minister and the House of Commons were liberal in their political affiliation. The vetoing created a deadlock in the government. The Prime Minister and the House of Commons proposed a referendum which would nullify the House of Lords power of veto over the budgetary matters. This was presented to the House of Lords with an ultimatum. If the referendum was not passed the House of Lords would be flooded with liberal Middle class citizens. The referendum was then passed and the deadlock broken. This shift of power was crucial in the infrastructure of the political system of England. World War I left a tremendous impression of reality on the English. Their confidence was compromised due to the ineffectiveness in combat and their dependence of United States aid for victory. This is the true end of all of the glory held by the British Empire. The English were left with a tremendous national debt totalling at $7 billion dollars. England would never be a hegemon in the international community again. World War II brought a feeling of unity back to England. "The Battle for Britain"

Is mental illness real Growing up I would feel sadness that would always linger, I would tell my parents how I felt and my mom would reply† It’s all in your head, you’re okay.† I then just brushed off this feeling for many years, thinking it’s not a big deal. Did you know approximately 1 out of 5 adults is affected by a mental illness? According to Szasz, â€Å"Mental health exist and like other illnesses.† Many people suffer from some sort of mental illness such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. To some, it is crippling, to others they can still function through the day. There are some options to choose if you ever want to get help such as medication or talk therapy.   Sometimes people don’t get the help they need because they don’t accept that they are living with a mental illness or they can’t afford it. There are many reasons why people don’t seek the help and treatment they need. Not only is it affecting a dults but children too. Less than 20% of children don’t get the treatment they need and about 50% of mental illness begins by the age of 14 years old. Mental illness has no preference, you can be any race, age, social class or religion. Even after you’ve been diagnosed it won’t explain why you feel a certain way because you have other factors to take in consideration such as genetic or environmental factors. For example, past trauma such as being abused when you were a child. Taking a closer look at your family history to see if   maybe someone in your family has a mental illness. Even by your location, where you live can contribute to your mental health. By coming to terms with these factors you are a step closer to getting the treatment you need or not if you choose not to seek any help. According to Dr. Cornwall in I don’t believe in mental illness, do you?   He states that â€Å"I don’t believe in mental illness. I believe we are sovereign souls that should not be imprisoned or be given forced treatments or offered any treatments that do us any harm when we are suffering human emotional suffering or madness.†   He feels that people have many experiences of human emotional suffering that he considers it â€Å"madness.†Ã‚   Cornwall believes that forced medication, restraints and medication for children and adults are violating human rights.   Instead of taking medication to numb our emotions, we should just show love, compassion and respect. Because that is the way our body is telling us that you’re okay. â€Å"Does mental illness have a physical, material cause, in the same way as cancer or a broken leg? Can it be tested for, diagnosed and treated with the same certainty as a physical disease? Whatever the answer to that question, it should cast no doubts or aspersions on the very real suffering of people with mental health problems† (Watts) Many people still believe that it’s just a phase or your just making excuses and that you’ll get over it but that isn’t always true sometimes doing nothing can make it worse.   People also assume that if you have a mental illness that you are crazy. For example, there’s always that cat lady with a billion cats that talks to herself. That right there is an example of someone with a mental illness, we all would immediately refer her as â€Å"crazy† but she’s just mentally ill. It is a medical condition and it affects your brain and it is treatable. There is a lot of stigma about mental illness in today’s society. By not taking care of our mental health it can affect us later on in the future such as, it can lead to suicide. Suicide is the tenth leading causes of deaths in the United States. More than 41,000 American lives are lost each year. Men are also three times more likely than women to take their lives. Many people believe that if you have a mental illness that you are weak and that you’re just lazy. Another reason, would be people think just because you are mentally ill that you can’t hold down a job. People who suffer a mental illness are actually more productive. Another factor is people with a mental illness are violent which is also a myth, they are no more violent than we are. Acknowledging your mental illness is important and it is a step to help you get the help you need. We need to be more aware of mental illnesses, educate others about it or talk about it more. Many people might be ashamed to speak about it but by speaking up about it breaks the social norms. Many people feel this way and its okay, because it isn’t easy but you have to remember that you are not alone. There is help if you seek for it but if you don’t you won’t feel any better you have to make an effort to want to change. By sharing your story of struggling with a mental illness it can be helpful to other people who are going through the same thing. We also need to learn the warning signs for someone with mental health problems such as abusing drugs, feelings hopeless, mood swings and thoughts of harming themselves. By learning this problem that affects more than 44 million people we are bringing awareness to it. Comparative analysis of labour productivity and the associated changes in sectors of production, in agriculture and mining sectors According to a quite des criptive definition, labour productivity is ‘a measurement of efficiency of production derived from the ratio of the real output to input over a period of time’ (National Statistics Office – Republic of the Philippines, 2012) 2.1 Indonesia The performance of Indonesia in regard to the growth of its economy is impressive. In fact, currently the country’s economy as ranking at the 16th position in the context of the global market (McKinsey and Company, 2012, p.1); by 2030 the economy of Indonesia is expected to be at the 7th position of the relevant index (McKinsey and Company, 2012, p.1). The significant increase of labour productivity, at a level of 60%, is considered as the key reason for the rapid growth of the country’s economy (McKinsey and Company, 2012, p.1). For reaching the targeted level of economic growth, i.e. for becoming the 7th most powerful economy in the world, Indonesia needs to increase the level of its labour productivity by †˜an additional 60%, compared to the rate achieved between 2000 and 2010’ (McKinsey and Company, 2012, p.1). In order to understand the rate of labour productivity in Indonesia it would be necessary to refer to the country’s trends in regard to labour force and employment growth. These trends are presented in Figure 1 below. An increase in the labour force in general seems to exist from 2004 up to 2010; however, this increase does not reflect the employment of young people, age between 15 and 24 (Figure 1); for the specific category of the labour force, a trend for continuous decrease is revealed for the years 2004 to 2010 (Figure 1). Although on a national level, in 2006, in more than 10 years, for the first time, teenage pregnancy increased to 3% from 2005 to 2006. At a state level, in 2005, Texas had the highest number of teenage births accounting for 62 births per 1000 women, in addition to New Mexico, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Arizona possessing the same number of teenage pregnancies. New Hampshire was the state with the lowest teenage births, 18 births per 1000 women, in addition to Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New Jersey possessing the same number of teenage pregnancies (Hamilton, 2009). From a local level, it is like trying to figure out, which came first, the chicken or the egg? Some causes of negative outcomes for teenage pregnancy are educational failure, poverty, unemployment, and low esteem could result from early child bearing before the female is ready. In 2006, a study conducted, has released that adolescents watching sexuality on television and in the media, are more likely to have sex out of curiosity. Each level of government support promising approaches such as abstinence education, family planning, Adolescent family life program, which was enacted in 1981 as an approach to prevent teenage pregnancy, community collaborations and youth development programs for boys and young men. All the levels of government share the same ideal goals and directives for young people. Although teenage pregnancies have decreased, it is not apparent in all regions, due to increased incidence of teenage pregnancy seen in some areas. The message is the clear ways need to be provided to help with decreasing the incidence of teenage pregnancy. Questions have been identified regarding if a 50% decrease in the 1998 levels will be met by the 2010 target date. As a way of reminding the students that abstinence is the best way to prevent pregnancy and diseases, some schools are offering the â€Å"abstinence only† education. Virginity pledges have become quite popular in this day for some young people, making a point. Conclusion Some health departments give out condoms to young women along with advice on ow to use the contraceptive. Laws against child marriage have been put into place, yet people are still marrying young people barely able to make good choices for themselves. All parents should take action by making sure that branches of government and health and education services work together, including helping them work effectively, get better support for teenage mother, including ways to obtain better education, better childcare, in addition to providing a way for them to obtain housing. Advising, counseling, and providing support can make a difference in their young lives.

Though this catch seem d great, it became a controversial topic after the game. Many were left to wonder whet her Pail deserved that win. After gathering information, the conclusion can be made that the ball was caught, but not cleanly. This can be proven by the commentary of people rooting for Pall, such as Mr.. Married, the Pall High offensive coach.Further proof can be seen through commentary of people rooting for Hamilton, such as Demerits Johnson, the Hamilton defensive back. Lastly, it can be proven by the commentary of unaffectionate observers, such as Owen Tyson, the football referee. Most people attending the game were rooting for the Dolphins, and almost every one of them agreed that the catch was made perfectly. Mr.. Married, the coach, claim De the catch was unbelievabl e (document 3). Any coach wants badly for their team to WI o his opinion about the catch might have been distorted.Valentine Buff said he Simi ply â€Å"reached out and pulled it in† (document 2); his perspective also was distorted considering that his pride was on the line, and his team was counting on him to make the catch. Frill Lay, the snack shop supervisor, was ecstatic about the catch. According to Lay, from his vantage point, he was able to clearly see the catch being made (document 13). English as a Second Language Essay

The United States has long been viewed as the Land of Opportunity for many decades. Despite the numerous challenges that the country had to face within the recent years, this image of the United States has not wavered. Hundreds of thousands of people from all over the world continue to flock to the United States to try their luck, and to provide their children a brighter future than what they could ever have in their respective countries of origin. The continuous stream of immigrants into the country, and the fact that most of these immigrants come from countries where English is not the national language, it is no longer difficult to come across an individual in the streets who either speaks no English or has a limited mastery of the language. This is despite the fact that there has now been a rise in the number of countries that have now started programs to help train the younger generations, and even adults, to become fluent and adept to speaking, reading and writing in the English language. In many states in the country, particularly those located along the U. S. – Mexico border, the number of individuals who are unable to speak, read, write English fluently outnumber those that do (Carreira 2000; Lipski 2004; U. S. English Foundation 2005). As a result, the U. S. government has taken measures to establish a set of guidelines and standards for faculty teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) in schools within the United States, especially in public school systems situated in areas within the U. S. – Mexico border such as South Texas. This paper aims to present and evaluate the standards that have been applied in the country with regards to the teaching of ESL in schools in the United States. The paper would also present the ideal classroom setting, standards and method of teaching of ESL in school facilities in the country. These ideal standards would then be compared to the current standards and methods that is observable in ESL teaching facilities in the country. Based on the discrepancies, recommendations would then be provided at the end of the paper in order to ensure that the ideal standards are realized. The Academic Achievement Gap Issue In order to understand the importance of the evaluation of the standards and method of teaching ESL in classrooms implemented by the U. S. government, a background on the different events that have led to the creation and implementation of these standards should first be provided. The population of students enrolling in school systems around the country has been dramatically changing since the 1990s. Because of the rise of the number of immigrants relocating in the United States, the ethnic backgrounds and origins of these students have become more diverse such that the ratio of the number of native English speakers in classrooms against non-English speakers is 1:10 (Short 2000). The diversification of the students in terms of their ethnic backgrounds has resulted to an observable division between English-speaking and non-English-speaking students, particularly when it comes to the level of their performance in academics. Research studies have shown that non-native English-speaking students constantly struggle in achieving the same academic performance and standing as compared to their native English-speaking peers, which has come to be known as the Academic Achievement Gap. Based on the studies conducted in reference to determining the factors which has resulted to the presence of this gap between students in school systems of all year levels, researchers have determined that the primary factor for the presence of this gap is due to the lack of proficiency of the English language on the part of the non-native English-speaking students (Jia, Eslami & Burlbaw 2006; Lavin-Loucks 2006; Rumberger & Anguiano 2003). The Implementation of ESL Standards Since its discovery, the U. S. government has made addressing the Academic Achievement Gap one of its major concerns. This has then resulted to the passing of the Educate America Act in order to cater to the needs of non-native English-speaking students to increase the standards of their academic performance within the classroom. As a result of the passing of this act, the Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages, Inc. (TESOL) developed a set of guidelines to serve as standards which would be implemented within the classroom setting (Short 2000). Altogether, there are nine ESL guidelines that have been established by TESOL to be implemented in academic institutions throughout the country. These guidelines were created in order to meet three specific objectives. The first of these three objectives is to provide non-native English-speaking students the ability to communicate within their social settings. Because of their limited mastery of the English language, non-native English-speaking students become withdrawn and non-participative in classroom discussions. Through the ESL standards established by TESOL, these students would be able to develop speech act behaviors which would, in turn, allow them to participate more during class discussions, comprehend the subject matter being discussed by the instructor and be able to convey themselves during social settings (Hafemik, Messerchmitt & Vandrick 2002; Short 2000). The second objective is to allow non-native English-speaking students the ability to achieve and excel within the academic institution. Regardless of the ethnic background of the students being handled, the expectations held by instructors to their students remain the same. By being able to provide the needs of non-native English-speaking students, they would be able to meet these expectations which include the completion of assignments through both written and oral methods (Hafemik, Messerschmitt & Vandrick 2002). The third objective TESOL aims to achieve through the implementation of ESL standards in academic institutions in the United States is to provide non-native English-speaking students the ability to use the English language in a manner that would be considered by their native English-speaking peers as socially and culturally correct. While it is true that a number of immigrants relocating in the United States have some form of mastery of written and oral English, the manner as to how the language is used by such immigrants may be considered by native English-speaking individuals to be rude and unacceptable. As such, the guidelines established by TESOL aims to correct the misuse of the English language in this manner by guiding non-native English-speaking students not just in becoming fluent and adept to the English language. The guidelines and standards would also aid in the teaching of the proper means of communicating using the English language such that their native English-speaking peers would regard as proper and appropriate (Short 2000).

Arizonas economy started out with great funding from the government and also from its abundance of natural resources. With the growing number of people moving to the new hot bed of economy, Arizona officials began to take more of a Laissez Faire approach to government. With WWI and eventually WWII, Arizona received several governmental contracts to build ships, planes and new military bases due to Arizonas natural closeness to the pacific campaign. Not long after that Arizonas economy started record numbers of economic increase, due vastly to the tax breaks and other incentives used to bring big business to the area. Large manufacturing, technology and automobile companies looked to relocate to the booming state. This change in opportunities left the natural resources industry in Arizona a distant memory of importance. With big business booming, who needed the small time industry that carried them from its creation to where they were just after WWI. On top of that, governmental procedure had to go along with this change. After all with every action there is a equal and just as great reaction that occurs. With the hands off approach the government had implemented there were also cut backs! Lower spending on education being the biggest one.
